The tryst with toys

Photo: personal

My three years old daughter is very fond of colourful building blocks from which she makes beautiful and unpredictable structures. It has a combination of blocks of various sizes and colours. She spends hours to think of possible complicated yet beautiful structures with proper care taken for the symmetry and the stability of the structure. Even the colour combination also appears precisely chosen.

Seeing her grown interest in the activity I decided to get another set for her so that she can make her imagination fly higher. With the fear spread around, first I thought of purchasing online.  I searched on the leading shopping portals and found plenty of such items and then I researched and none of them could meet our requirement.  Our single requirement was that the item should not be ‘Made in China’. Though on many items the origin of country was not visible, the research could reveal that the products were in fact, ‘Made in China’. There were some products for which we had doubts, we ordered one of those, but when the product arrived, it was the same. We returned it back.

It was our personal view and decision that we shall not be using China made products. Not that it had something to do with G2G tension, but primarily because we felt that the carelessness in following the protocols during their research on corona virus had resulted in such an awful situation the world is in today.  Further, Chinese advances in various parts of the world encroaching land and water are malicious and unacceptable.

Fed up with online opacity, I decided to get the item from the store. After all, it was a matter of pride for a contemporary father to gift his daughter something non-electronic. And, my son had the luxury of having such toys and much more when he was in this age. Why should I let my daughter suffer?

I approached a nearby toy store. Raided the items and their packing like a police personnel, but couldn’t find one suiting our requirement. Few items were even tagged as ‘Made in India’ but when opened were the same from inside. I was just wondering, even after seven decades of independence we are not able to make indigenous toys for our kids? And it is not only in our country. When I had purchased few toys for my son during my stay in UK, surprisingly I had found the same label there too. ‘Made in China’ from UK with love? I still have couple of those with me. The reach of ‘Made in China’ products can directly be mapped with the reach of corona virus in the world.

I left the store in frustration. Then I decided to go to a bigger store where the chances of variety and diversity were more. True it was but again looking at the label was annoying. Luckily I found few Indian stuff but the quality of the product was down and the price was up. My ‘parental conscience’ didn’t allow me to adjust with it. Rise in price is OK but I should get at least a similar type and quality product. I did not give up hope and tried at another toy store. The story was no different there.  Now, the irritation levels were so high that I thought of tweeting the state of affairs to who’s and who’s of the country. Is this the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’? What have we done in this many years to ensure that we build everything from a needle to a ship in this country?

I decided to go back and purchase the available item from the shop near to my house that I had explored first.

‘What is my daughter’s fault if there are Chinese toys flooded in the market’? When my son can enjoy the luxury of toys during his childhood why not my daughter? Anyways, theoretically the government stresses too much on the rights of girl child. They have various schemes launched for them. In that pretext at least I am empowered enough to fulfill all the desires of the girl child.

I parked the vehicle near the shop. Suddenly I felt someone pulling my shirt gently from back. I turned and saw a lean girl begging for food.

‘Uncle, please give something. We didn’t had anything from morning’. She pointed towards two kids playing by the side of the road.

I saw that side. Two small kids possibly of the age of my daughter were busy playing with a small pile of stones. They try to put them in various shapes, one over other and were enjoying the outcome of their efforts. They were so happy playing with those ‘indigenous’ stones that the entire toy shop with sophisticated and imported toys looked a junkyard to them. This small event changed my entire outlook.

I came back home and told my daughter that the I have ordered ‘indigenous’ toys for her and it may take some time. Unaware of my state of mind, she remained happy as usual, ‘OK papa’ she said and continued playing with her building blocks. I thought, her childhood may not wait, but I will wait, we will wait!!!

These amazing kids!

r_cub

Kids today are quite difficult to handle as compared to the kids of earlier days. Probably, due to the fact that they are exposed to the gadgets at an early stage. No wonder kids start watching TV or videos in smart phones right from their first birthday. These kids can embarrass the elders the way they operate the mobile phones and explore the features. Parents also conveniently leave their kids with the smart phones so that they do not disturb them. Incidentally we can see every member of the family busy with their mobile phones. Continue reading

Angel on earth

saatv

Beauty that the Mother Nature offers to us is just awesome. People visit the places blooming with flowers and the greenery and feel elated. My friends visited places rich in natural beauty, natural resources, flora and fauna, this New Year.

But I was at home. The reason was quite simple. I have a cute little daughter. And  One of the greatest gifts I’ve ever gotten is my daughter (Ace Frehley). Probably others have not carefully noticed their little ones smiling, but when my daughter smiles, I feel that there have been flowers blooming all around.  As she walks slowly and cautiously on the while tiles of the house, it appears as if I am visiting the Antarctic area with Penguin walking to reach me in its unique style.  She laughs and it seems that the small pearls inside her little mouth will beautify the entire surroundings.

As David Duchovny says and I too agree that “The happiest moment of my life was probably when my daughter was born”.

She calls people around with names she is slowly taught and it appears that the sweet voice of cuckoo is making the environment delightful. Her playful actions, her crawling, her standing and falling down, her rolling, all comes like a delight pre-programmed by the Mother Nature to soothe the eyes and souls of the parents and the onlookers. Why one need to go to temple when the Almighty Himself has descended in the form of the daughter.

That is one of the reasons why I rush back to house after work. As Hugh Jackman mentions, “When I come home, my daughter will run to the door and give me a big hug, and everything that’s happened that day just melts away” the same is true for me too. I may be bit cruel but sometimes I feel pity on those who either do not have any daughter or do not spend time seeing the angel growing up. No amount of money gathering exercise can replace this wealth. Once this phase passes away, no matter how many million dollars one invests he is not going to get anything back.

A daughter makes the life of parents special and that is nothing less than an achievement!

An alert!

Few days back, my son has reported an unusual incident happened at the school premises.

It appears that when he was coming out of the class walking down the steps, a senior student came to him and slapped on his face. My son did even not know the boy; forget about thinking of any other possibility for that slap. The senior boy was with his bunch of friends and all of them started laughing after the slap.

Removing ‘evil eye’

Kids are the most beautiful gift of this materialistic world. A smile on their face makes us forget all our agonies. They are our future and they become what we teach them to be. Couples without kids are the most unfortunate beings in this world. The childless couples go from temples to churches to daragahs for the fulfillment of their desire of having kids. Many of these succeed too making firm the belief of the existence of a supernatural power in this world.

Parents do anything and everything for the happiness of their kids. Many fall in the trap of pseudo-religious leaders who take the parents for a ride and poor parents let that happen. It is said that Mughal emperor Babur sacrificed his own life for the good health of his son Humayun.  King Dhritarashtra’s blind love for his son is also well known. Over and above all, the mother’s love for her kids is beyond the words.

This love is the source of various superstitions of which most are common with all the parents all over the world irrespective of their education levels. For example, black cat crossing your path will make you think twice before proceeding. Similarly, you may not initiate many things on Friday, the 13th or say ‘touchwood’ for something good to stay forever.

Our kids in their early ages were quite cranky especially during the night time. They used to get up in the middle of their sleep and start crying for no known reasons. This generally used to happen on the days when we take the kids for some outing, be it in the park or the malls etc. Even when someone visited our house to see the kids, this was noticed. We used to check for possible stomach ache or something related but never could find any reasons. Few times we were forced to take the kids to the doctors in the mid of the might but it didn’t help much either.

Fortunately my grandmother during her visit to our place noticed this and suggested us to put a black spot on a child’s forehead before taking outside. This, she told will make the child look bit of ugly and the kid will stay protected from the so-called evil powers. This, I noticed was the common practice among all our relatives and they used to religiously put a little dot of kohl on the side of a child’s forehead a negative vibe over the kid Though I was not convinced, the father inside me forced me to follow this and we saw appreciable difference.

Over and above this, she also advised us to perform an exercise for ‘removing evil eye’ from the kid by taking a pinch of salt in the fist and them moving the fist circling the kid’s head seven times and then disposing off the salt in the running tap water. This also appeared ridiculous but then parents are the breeds who do many such unscientific things for the health, happiness and well being of their kids.  And, to my surprise this worked quite effectively. People told that there are various scientific explanations for this, but for us the output mattered more than the justification and there are few things that do not in any way stifle the spirits of the concerned parents.

father’s angel

She waits for him checking her biological clock

she has her infant plans that they together unlock

She had her eyes on the door lying on her cozy bed

few tiny drops of pearl that she will sometimes shed

unaware of worldy pleasures, selfishness and greed

her innocent heart and curious eyes can quickly read

those moments of wait makes her intermitently sad

she is the newborn daughter of a proud loving dad

for her the whole world starts and ends with her dad

she is crazy for her father and her father too is glad

she is ready to hide in his arms nest like a little bird

no wonder daughters are the best gift of this world
